What hail actually does to a shingle.

Bruising, not holes. Soft to the thumb, invisible from the ground — and it shows up as leaks, years later.

// What to look for

Hail bruises. It rarely punches holes.

Bruising

Granules crushed into the mat — a dark, soft spot the size of the stone. Invisible from the ground.

Granule loss

Bare patches expose the asphalt mat to UV. The shingle ages out early — and sheds into the gutter.

Cracked mats & fiberglass fractures

Larger stones crack the mat itself. That’s a leak on a timer, not cosmetic wear.

Soft-metal dents

Gutters, downspouts, vents, and flashing dent before shingles bruise — they’re the tell we check first.

What hail damage looks like

If you saw any of this in your yard, your roof took the same hits.

April 29, 2025: golf-ball hail, on the record

One cell crossed Wyoming County in under an hour. The official reports run from Attica to Warsaw to Covington.

Source: NOAA/NCEI Storm Events Database, Wyoming County, NY, April 29, 2025. The same afternoon logged 50-knot (≈58 mph) thunderstorm wind at Attica, Covington, and Dale — that’s its own kind of damage.

Was your home in the path?

  • Warsaw, Covington, and Sheldon Corners took confirmed, measured hail — 1″ and up, the size that bruises an asphalt shingle.
  • Attica’s documented hit that day was wind, not measured hail. If your roof is leaking or shedding granules, an inspection sorts out which — and whether it’s storm damage at all.
  • Nearby? Report points are where someone measured a stone, not where the swath ended. The only honest answer is on the roof — and the check is free either way.

Policies require prompt notice, and most carriers apply a one-to-two-year practical window. The April 2025 storm is inside that window today — it won’t be for much longer.

Straight talk on insurance claims. We inspect, photograph, and document the damage, and we give you a written, itemized estimate you can hand to your insurer — and we can meet your adjuster on the roof. Your insurance company decides what’s covered. We don’t negotiate settlements — by New York law only a licensed public adjuster or attorney can represent you in a claim. We never pay, waive, or absorb deductibles (New York GBL §771-b makes that insurance fraud), and no contractor can promise your claim will be approved.

A hail bruise today is a leak in three winters.

Hail damage questions

What size hail damages an asphalt roof?

Around 1″ (quarter size) is where bruising starts on aging shingles; 1.25″ and up threatens most roofs. The April 29, 2025 reports in Wyoming County ran from 1″ to 1.75″ — golf-ball size at the top end.

How is a hail bruise different from normal wear?

Wear is even and everywhere; hail is random hits on the slopes that faced the storm. A bruise is a soft, dark spot where granules were crushed into the mat — press it with a thumb and it gives. We photograph both so you can see the difference.

My town isn’t in the confirmed list. Should I still check?

If hail fell at your house, yes — report points are where someone measured a stone, not the edge of the swath. The inspection is free, and if there’s no damage we’ll say so in writing.

Is it too late to claim April 2025 hail damage?

For many policies, not yet. Prompt notice is required and most carriers apply a one-to-two-year practical window — the storm is inside that window today, but not for much longer. Ask your agent for your policy’s exact terms.

Do you handle the insurance claim for me?

No — and in New York, no contractor legally can. We inspect, photograph, and give you a written, itemized estimate, and we can meet your adjuster on the roof. You file the claim; your insurer decides coverage. How the process works →
